SCSP CONNECTS WITH THE REALLY LIVING CORPORATION

Groups Collaborate, Provide Computers to Low-Income Dialysis Patients

St. Clair Specialty Physicians has partnered with a local philanthropist and entrepreneur to provide computers to low-income patients.  Our practice was replacing office computers to prepare for a new electronic medical records system, but rather than put our equipment into storage, we called native Detroiter John Cook.

Mr. Cook was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease as a teenager and has required dialysis treatment for over twenty years.  John knew the lives of some dialysis patients were endangered because they lacked reliable transportation to and from dialysis treatment centers.  In 2002, he founded “The Really Living Corporation”, a charitable organization that provides free transportation, access to social workers, assistance with medical bills, and other services to low-income patients.

St. Clair Specialty Physicians reached out to The Really Living Corporation because it parallels our own commitment to dialysis patients in Detroit.  We donated six Dell computers and other equipment to John’s organization which was eager to distribute them to families that couldn’t otherwise afford a PC.  Our Information Technology Department tested and cleaned up the equipment, installed software and added extra memory to get them ready for new homes.

John Cook, 39, has spent more than half of his life on dialysis.

Kidney disease is indeed a silent epidemic in Detroit, and the efforts of organizations like The Really Living Corporation certainly improve the health and spirit of patients.  We look forward to an ongoing partnership with The Really Living Corporation and encourage others to become involved with this great cause.
